Our Garden, Phase 1: Planting

When we lived on Wilson Street, Jack and I had a little garden in our backyard.  We didn't plant much, and mostly only yielded tomoatoes, but it was a garden that was ours nonetheless.  Our house on Rochester Ct. does not have a great yard for a garden, but we really want Owyn and Zoee to have the experience of planting vegetables, watching them grow, and (hopefully) eating the fruits of their (hopefully) hard work. 

So we planted a garden this year!

There is a community garden not far from our house, and we rented a plot within that garden.  Today was planting day for us.  We headed to Pleasant Valley Nursery, a local flower/garden shop, and allowed Owyn and Zoee to pick which vegetables they would like to grow in our garden.  Owyn chose peas, green beans, and rainbow carrots.  Zoee chose lettuce and plain orange carrots.  Jack and I chose tomatoes, peppers (bell and hot), onions, broccoli, and spinach.  We all worked to help plant the seeds, water the seeds, and mark our rows.

We do have a few extra seeds from the green beans, peas, spinach, and broccoli that we will plant in pots at home so Owyn and Zoee will be able to more closely see how the plants grow and change.  We plan on riding our bikes to our garden throughout the summer so we can water our plants, pull weeds, and see how things are progressing.  I hope that we get more than just the tomatoes because Owyn and Zoee were so excited about the thought of eating the vegetables that they planted.  We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed that all goes according to plan.
