A Day With Daddy

I had the day off for Martin Luther King Day and Owyn didn't have school for the same reason.  Zoee, well Zoee has every day off.  Laura and I told Owyn and Zoee that they could go to the Children's museum with Daddy, but first we had to celebrate MLK by doing a couple of service projects in the morning.  After breakfast, Owyn, Zoee, and I went to Hy Vee to buy some food for the Crisis Center.  I let each one pick out a couple of their favorite foods.  We picked up some can goods, juice, cereal and bread.  We delivered to the Crisis Center and headed off to Trinity Church in downtown Iowa City.  Trinity was having a MLK service day.  They had several projects going on at the same time, baking, making quilts, putting together Shelter House care packages, and knitting.  We went directly to the basement where toiletries were put into ziplock bags for Shelter House clients. Owyn and Zoee were not particularly excited about the service project as they were more interested in getting to the Children's Museum.  When it was time to leave however, I had to drag them out.  They both loved putting together the toiletry bags.  In fact the organizers eventually had to kick us out as they were running out of toiletry goods.  So we went to see what else we could do.  Suprisingly they said they could use us in the quilting room.  Luckily they didn't want us to sew.  No, they needed people to decorate quilt squares.  And that we did.  Both Owyn and I drew our best Chicago L train  map while Zoee drew a pretty design using every color she could find.

Next stop for the day was the Children's Museum in Coralville.  There was plenty to do for both Owyn and Zoee for the whole afternoon.  We visited most of the exhibits, but spent the most time in the "Flight" room with the airplanes, simulators, hot air balloon, and parachutes.  We all had a great time.
